Today is the start of a fabulous new series on Love and Lavender—following a real bride through all the details of planning a wedding. Maryam will be writing on here frequently about her journey to becoming a Mrs so check back often!
If you had met me a few years ago, you’d expect me to have followed my dreams and gone to vet school, stayed single and focused on my career. I guess it’s true when they say ” Life Happens to You While You’re Busy Making Other Plans.” Today, I’m working in marketing for a start-up based in San Francisco, engaged to a wonderful man from Northern Ireland, doing pretty much the opposite of what I had worked so hard for in college, and I have to say I couldn’t be happier that I’ve gone down this path. But, I’m getting ahead of myself. Let me introduce myself to you wonderful readers, my name is Maryam, I’m 24 years old living in the beautiful city of San Francisco with my fiancé Stephen and our two dogs, and I’m in the midst of planning a wedding for 250 people in Northern Ireland. I have no brothers or sisters, haven’t been part of a wedding before, and definitely don’t have experience planning a wedding in a completely different country. To say the least, I’ve got my work cut out for me!
I was never one of those girls who thought about planning her wedding from a young age…instead, I was busy volunteering, studying, and going to school. A big wonderful white wedding was the last thing that was ever on my mind. In complete honesty, the idea of massive white ruffles, big bows, and flowers completely repulsed me. Any of the weddings I had been to were in San Francisco, and definitely not ‘typical weddings,’ instead people had commitment ceremonies, many of the brides didn’t wear white, typically less than 100 people, and mason jars were incredibly abundant. To say the least, I’m completely and totally unprepared to plan a massive wedding in a Catholic church in Northern Ireland.
However, I must also admit that after getting engaged and starting the journey to the aisle I fell in love with the idea of making my big day my own. Creating a wonderful ceremony and reception filled with special treasures and unique items sounded so exciting and fun. I began to spend hours every day on Pinterest, StumbleUpon, and just searching Google to brainstorm ideas for the big day. It was like finding the right man and getting engaged completely transformed my opinion of weddings, and I couldn’t be more excited!
Now, that you know a little bit about me you’re probably wondering why I’m writing. Well, I’ve teamed up with Love & Lavender to give you a behind the scenes look at the process of planning a wedding. You’ll follow me step-by-step on my journey as I do everything from design and send my Save-the-Dates, to picking bridesmaids and groomsmens gifts, to seating assignments. All along the way I’ll have freebies, downloadables, contests, giveaways, and more! You’ll get to hear my inner-most thoughts, ideas, fears, and hopes from the beginning of my planning journey through the big day itself. I’m incredibly excited to share every part of my journey with you! Hopefully there’s advice you can give me, and some advice I can give you if you’re in the planning process just like myself.
